We would like to say a huge thank you to the Law Society of Northern Ireland for their generous contribution of £10,000 to the Community Justice Fund. The donation has been given to support access to justice on behalf of people in Northern Ireland who are suffering hardship as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Law Society of Northern Ireland works to promote access to justice, whether through legal services delivered by solicitors throughout Northern Ireland, or by supporting the advice sector for those who do not qualify for help under the legal aid scheme.
This is the first donation to the Community Justice Fund that has come from an organisation based in Northern Ireland and will go directly to help specialist legal advice charities in the region.
The Community Justice Fund was set up to support specialist social welfare law advice agencies dealing with the immediate impact of the pandemic, as well providing longer term support for the sector’s wider renewal.
The Fund is open to applicants from all over the UK, with grants of up to £100,000 available. Specialist legal advice charities in Northern Ireland are encouraged to apply.
Rowan White, President of the Law Society of Northern Ireland, said: “The Covid-19 pandemic has caused very real hardship, and now more than ever people need help with issues such as unemployment, debt and welfare benefits. Where the Law Society can help, we shall do so, whether through the excellent legal services provided by our Members or through our support for the Community Justice Fund.”
Ruth Daniel, CEO of the Access to Justice Foundation, said: “We’re very grateful to the Law Society Northern Ireland for their donation. This is the first donation allocated specifically for legal advice charities within Northern Ireland and we’re keen to continue supporting the legal advice sector in the country and helping vulnerable people throughout the UK get access to justice during these challenging times.”
