21 June – 21 October 2021

Over 400 teams have already signed up to take part in Legal Walks this year. The events will raise much needed funds for specialist free legal advice charities in the UK, which have been greatly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Taking place on various dates between the 21 June – 21 October 2021, the Legal Walks are a series of annual fundraising events organised by the Access to Justice Foundation (in partnership with the regional Legal Support Trusts and committees) and the London Legal Support Trust.

The Legal Walks kick off this summer with events taking place in Preston, Derby, Doncaster, Northampton, Sheffield, Brighton, Eastbourne, Tunbridge Wells, Hastings, York and Guildford in June. Following in July, walks will take place in Southampton, Oxford, Reading, Leeds (virtual) and Chichester. Legal Walks in Scotland, Wales and major cities across England, including London, Manchester and Birmingham, will take place in the autumn.

The walks see participants from local law firms, chambers, in-house legal teams and universities come together with local judges, legal advice centres and members of the community to walk 5-10K to raise thousands of pounds for frontline free legal advice services in their local region. In 2019, the Legal Walks raised over £1M for advice services, but sadly, in 2020 the majority of walks had to be cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The return of the Legal Walks comes at a critical time for the UK’s legal advice sector, which has faced an overwhelming increase in calls for help from people greatly affected by the pandemic. The services have worked extremely hard over the past year to remain open for the vulnerable people who rely on them, whilst also managing service delivery overhaul, a lack of resource and severe financial issues.

Organisers are encouraging as many teams as possible to take part in the Legal Walks this year to help raise much needed funds for the free legal advice sector. These services provide essential help to vulnerable people who often have no other means of seeking legal advice, representation, or support.

Laura Cassidy, Fundraising and Development Manager at the Access to Justice Foundation, said:

“There is still time to sign up for any of the Legal Walks taking place this year. Not only are they great fun, but they are a brilliant way to raise awareness and much needed funds for the free legal advice sector at this challenging time. We’re encouraging everyone who is passionate about access to justice to make a difference and walk side by side with us again this year.”

Bob Nightingale MBE, Head of Fundraising at the London Legal Support Trust, said:

“We have been really encouraged by the support so far for all of our walks and we hope to keep building on that enthusiasm. We talk to free legal advice agencies on a daily basis and there is still not enough funding available to help even those in greatest need. The Legal Walks are a fantastic way to help raise desperately needed funds.”

All Legal Walks are being planned in accordance with the latest government guidelines, and it is hoped that legal sector will be walking together in person, from 21 June. The Access to Justice Foundation and the London Legal Support Trust will provide regular updates on their websites in the lead up to each walk and will provide as much notice as possible should any walks be turned virtual.
