About us
Everyone deserves equal access to justice, yet across the UK, millions of people face legal problems without the support they need.
The Access to Justice Foundation is the only funder dedicated exclusively to increasing free legal support, advice and representation nationwide.

We work with funders, legal professionals, and advice organisations to get resources where they’re needed most. We focus on communities where people are less likely to know about or be able to access legal help.
The challenges we want to solve
Legal problems don’t wait for convenient moments. They arrive when people are already struggling through job loss, family breakdown, housing crises, or discrimination. Without the right support, these problems risk spiralling.
The free legal advice we fund transforms lives, strengthening communities and ensuring everyone has the power to seek redress.

Our strategy to improve access to justice
The next three years will be transformative. We’re building on what works while investing in new approaches that will significantly increase funding for free legal advice across the UK.
What makes us different
-
1We’re subject matter experts
Our focus on free legal advice has given us unique industry insights and expertise. This expertise means every pound we distribute works harder and reaches further.
-
2We’re trusted in law
We’re the prescribed charity established in statute to receive Pro Bono Costs Orders and undistributed damages from opt-out collective actions in the Competition Appeal Tribunal. Our role is recognised in the legal system, and that trust translates into funding streams directed at where they’re most needed.
-
3We’re built on collaboration
Our foundation emerged from the legal profession and advice sector working together. The Law Society of England and Wales, The Bar Council, CILEx, and the Advice Services Alliance are our founding members. That collaborative spirit runs through everything we do. We work with other funders, our funded partners, and the wider legal community to maximise our combined impact.
-
4We’re evidence led
We listen to the people delivering advice on the ground and use their insights to shape our funding decisions.
